Our Story
Hey, Squirrels! I am Aubrey, owner and head squirrel in charge of your local indie bookstore.
Curious Squirrel Bookshop was barely more than a dream when an unexpected opportunity turned it into a reality almost overnight. A special thanks goes out to Erin Johnson of Dance Fit Club Indy for believing in my mission, believing in me, and partnering with us to make this thing happen.
I have always been curious about the world around me and continue to enjoy learning about all sorts of things, especially the experiences and perspectives of others. Reading has always provided that for me no matter the season of life. I can go so far and explore so much just by sitting down with a good book.
Books have been instrumental in teaching me about the world I live, the people I share it with, and myself.
Even with the best intentions, I will never know what I don’t know - not to be intended as an excuse. Reading - particularly reading Own Voices - has better developed my awareness and empathy of other’s experiences and be a better fellow human.
Although I grew up a cis white girl from the mid-west, I was raised by liberal parents - a trailblazing feminist mother and an activist professor for a father. So, as a young adult, I was shocked at how much I hadn’t learned or truly understood (and that I never really could truly understand) other’s experiences. I will always have much more to learn. But, it is not really about me or people like me. Most importantly, it imperative that historically excluded identities and groups of people should be able to see shelves full of rich stories and diverse characters written from authors who share that same identity.
I love that there are countless great stories out there with a wide variety of representation for almost everyone. I am hoping The Curious Squirrel can help readers (side note: everyone is a reader) of all ages make that connection no matter their favorite genre or wheelhouse.
This bookshop is committed to amplifying historically marginalized voices and underrepresented issues and themes; curating an inclusive and representative book selection, heavy with own voices; promoting them to our readers; and collaborating with other community organizations that share our values.
*Never hesitate to reach out and let me know if I am missing something or misrepresenting something. I will do my best to educate myself but know I am bound to make mistakes.
